Worldwide Veterinary Service was founded in 2003 by Luke Gamble MRCVS. Luke realised that many animal charities and sanctuaries are often run by extremely well-meaning people whose requirement for veterinary aid and assistance is prohibitively expensive and often not readily available. The idea was developed to create an organisation that could pool veterinary resources and direct them to assist animal charities and non-profit organisations around the world. WVS evolved so that it would be available to help charitable organisations dealing with any species of animal. The goal was to create a charity that would enable volunteers with different specialities and experiences to be directed to charities that could most benefit from their help. At WVS we realise that it is not only veterinary trained personnel that can be of benefit to our associated charities. It is for this reason that we encourage people with a range of skills to join us. To date, many non-veterinary members have volunteered on teams in a range of different roles. Even those who do not wish to join one of our teams abroad can be of immense value in fundraising or spreading the word of WVS at home. A key element of the charity is education and all members can play a part in this. As a relatively new charity, our history is currently being written, but to date we have over 170 associated charities based all over the world in five continents. From when we first started sending one team out every two months in our first year, in 2007 we sent over 30 teams all over the world.
For WVS to grow we are dependent on a plentiful supply of volunteers, drug donations and financial support, not to mention your feedback and advice to ensure the charity continues to fulfil its potential. The key is to ensure that we objectively assess the benefit of what we do and ensure that our resources are always utilised in a sustainable and beneficial way. | ![]() Two WVS volunteers operating on an injured Macaque in Indonesia ![]() Three dogs in a shelter in Dubrovnik vaccinated with donations administered by WVS |
