Micko the Bear Appeal – Serbia:
WVS was contacted in March 2010 by a Serbian charity called ARKA, who rescues brown bears that have been mistreated while being trained as ‘dancing bears’. A bear at their sanctuary called Micko, was seriously ill and they were unable to get a diagnosis from Serbian vets on his condition. After contacting a number of other charities with no joy, they sent out an SOS to WVS.
An immediate appeal was set up and within hours, WVS was liaising between ARKA and a bear expert in the UK to give emergency veterinary advice. After a couple of days, the condition had worsened and so with donations from WVS supporters and the Born Free Foundation, a team consisting of a bear expert from Animals Asia Foundation, a vet nurse from Paignton Zoo and the WVS Charity and Projects Manager, were on a plane flying to Serbia.
Unfortunately, after carrying out a full examination including an x-ray, it was confirmed that Micko was suffering from a fully developed tumour, which was inoperable. The hard decision was made to put him to sleep.
Although the story of Micko came to a very sad end, the team were able to help many of the other bears in ARKA’s care, including a female called Kassandra who was horrifically disfigured after a nose ring was pulled out of her face. WVS will continue to support ARKA and the fantastic work that they continue to do.
2008 and 2009 Parcel Appeal:
Each year WVS holds a parcel appeal to raise funds for one of the core aspects of the charities work – donating veterinary supplies and equipment to animal welfare charities across the globe. Over the past 2 years we have achieved some fantastic results:
2008 – £286,024.81 of supplies sent to charities all over the world
2009 – £382,637.34 of supplies sent to charities all over the world

2007 Surgical Kit Campaign:
A basic bitch spay kit costs around £80 – £100. This obviously adds up to a huge expense and is a big drain on charity funds…. but surgical instruments are essential for our work to continue. The surgical kit campaign enabled us to get the funds in and the surgical kits out.
